F-17 Fighter Squadron - "Jolly Rogers"
Formed in January 1943 Fighting Squadron 17 (VF-17) was one of the most successful of the US Navy squadrons in WW2.
They were the first unit to fly the latest fighter, the Vought F4U Corsair. And operating from land bases in the Solomon Islands, VF-17 shot down 154 Japanese aircraft in 76 days of combat
They were deactivated in March 1944
