Wing Commander Johnson was the RAF's second highest scoring fighter pilot of WW2.  He scored 34 aerial combat victories plus several shared ones. 

He later served with the US Air Force to get fighter operations experience and flew the F-86 Sabre and F-80 Shooting Star in the Korean War.
