The Black Heart was the personal insignia of WW1 French Ace, Charles Nungesser, and it was painted on every aircraft that he flew.
After the war, in May 1927 he and his wartime flying partner Francois Coli attempted to make the first non-stop transatlantic flight from Paris to New York. They named their aircraft, L'Oiseau Blanc (The White Bird) and painted the Black Heart on the side of it. Sadly they never made it and vanished out over the northern Atlantic Ocean. A mystery that remains to this day...
