1st Lt Urban "Ben" Drew joined the USAAF in October 1942. In May 1944 he was assigned to 375th Fighter Squadron "Yellowjackets", 361st Fighter Group based at Bottisham in England.
He flew 75 missions across occupied Europe and was an Ace with six aerial victories. This included destroying two Messerschmitt 262's on October 7, 1944. Drew was awarded the Air Force Cross for this.
And with two wingmen, he destroyed the Luftwaffe's only six-engine flying boat at Seefliegerhorst Bug.
This was a German Naval Air Station and Floatplane base on the island of Rügen, 142 miles / 230 kms north of Berlin.
After the war in Europe ended, he was assigned to the 413th Fighter Squadron, 414th Fighter Group, Flying P-47N's at Iwo Jima in the Pacific Theater.
