This was a Luftwaffe fighter wing, created in 1936.   JG 54 took part in the Invasion of Poland in 1939, the Battle of Britain, the invasion of the Balkans in 1940 and Operation Barbarossa - the invasion of the Soviet Union.  

They flew Bf 109F fighters and later the more powerful Fock-wulf 190.
