Captain Charles Nungesser was an Ace fighter pilot with the French Air Service during the First World War.   He was also known as the "Hussard of Death."

He scored 43 aerial combat victories and flew with Escadrille 65, V106 and V116.  During his flying career he received many awards from six countries.  

Nungesser was also an adventurer and after the war, attempted to make the first non-stop transatlantic flight from Paris to new York in May 1927. 

Flying with his comrade Francois Coli, they disappeared somewhere over the Atlantic near Newfoundland.
