WW2 USAAF Eighth Air Force
During WW2, USAAF activated the Eighth Air Force in January 1942. There were three main units; the VIII Bomber Command, VIII Fighter Command and the Ground Air Services Command.
By 1944, with over 200,000 personnel based in England, the Eighth could send more than 2,000 four-engine bombers, with 1,000 fighter escorts on any single mission. This earned the Eighth Air Force the nickname, the "Mighty Eighth."
