The US Ninth Air Force was formed in August 1941 as V Air Support Command, and  redesignated the Ninth in April 1942.   It was part of the Allied drive across Egypt, Libya, Italy and Sicily and played a major operational role throughout the D-Day invasion of Normandy in 1944.
