In January 1942, USAAF activated the Eighth Air Force.  It had three units; VIII Bomber Command, VIII Fighter Command and Ground Air Services Command.

By 1944 the Eighth had the capacity to send more than 2,000 four-engine bombers, with 1,000 fighter escorts on a single mission, earning them the nickname, the "Mighty Eighth."
